Welcome to the Grade Two Turtle Pond!!
Grade Two Subject Overview 2010-2011 Language Arts Learning Language learning in the Grade Two classroom utilizes both a whole language and a phonics based learning approach. Literacy Place Reading Series: This is a Whole Language based reading series that includes worksheets which focus on reading grade level books. Students will be doing sequencing and webbing activities, phonics activities, story comprehension and story writing skills. Momentum Reading Series: Students will work on an individualized reading program. They will receive a levelled reading book and activity worksheets. As your child reads and rereads a levelled book, their sight words knowledge increases, their comprehension improves and their reading fluency flourishes. More information will be sent home about this program at the end of September. Phonics: Student will work on phonics worksheets that will correspond directly with the weekly spelling words rule. Spelling: The spelling words will be based on specific rules that we will study each week, as well as some ‘rule breakers’. Students will be tested each Thursday morning and are expected to study for these tests at home. Sight Word Learning: Your child will need to learn many words that cannot be sounded out. Therefore, they will need to memorize these words. I will be sending home word lists in their home reading duo-tang, which will also be practiced at school. Writing: Students will be writing in journals, writing letters to pen-pals (other grade two students), writing narrative stories and writing expository reports. Math Learning The students will be learning from the math program Math Focus. The program promotes both hands on learning and reproducible worksheet poractice . I will also supplement the program with teacher-made worksheets. We will be exploring numeracy, addition and subtraction to 100, problem solving skills, shapes, patterns and measurement. Science Learning There are five science units that will encourage students to develop their natural curiosity and learn about the world around them by exploring it. These units are: Buoyancy and Boats, Magnetism, Hot and Cold Temperatures, Exploring Liquids, and Small Crawling and Flying Animals. Social Studies Learning There are four social studies units that will help students develop a process for identifying characteristics of communities within Canada. These units are: Looking at Places, Looking at People, Looking at Work, and Looking at You.
I am looking forward to meeting each of you as the school year progresses! Heather Van Bavel
